Internet Monk has a great series going on how evangelicalism pushes its own out the door. It’s very hard hitting, and I highly recommend it. I hope to find time to write some about it.
Part I: Disillusionment with the Biblical Worldview
Part II: Disillusionment with God-Proving Religious Experience
Part III: Disillusionment with Christian Community
Part IV: Abandoning Christian Commitment Itself
Part V: Summary Reflections to Come
OK, I read these four. What’s your point? While they were arguing with the bathwater, the baby got away.
Interesting, though, that they have the same problems with “community” that UUs do.
The thing that got me was the commenter who said Worldview Tension + Experience Tension + Community Tension = Commitment Tension. If those three happen in any combination, the person is going to leave the congregation, no matter what. It just a matter of when and how.
Though I think instead of “tension” we need something a little stronger. Maybe alienation?
