So CNN put up a compare and contrast list between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. It listed his religion as Catholic and hers as Christian.
WTF?
Putting aside the implication that Catholics are somehow different from, I can only assume, real Christians, I looked Palin up to see exactly what flavor of Christian she is.
Wikipedia lists Palin as being Assemblies of God, the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination. AGs practice speaking in tongues and faith healing. (Chutney went to a couple of AG churches in high school.)
So I can’t help but wonder: Does she speak in tongues or not?
The bigger question is who cares.
Oh, I care, and I hope there’s video.
I just mean that I am sick of religion being ANY part of our democratic process, our government, our public lives. I wish it would be a personal issue not a public one.
It would be nice if religion could be kept out of politics, yes. But, when you’re running for the highest offices in the land, people want to know what kind of person you are, and what kinds of choices you might make. The church you choose to attend is a piece of the informational pie.
Personally, thinking that someone potentially as unreasonably ideological as a typical Assemblies of God follower might be a heartbeat away from the Presidency gives me the heebies.
I also think it is not a “who cares?” question because it is HER big thing that she is a Christian and, along with that, anti-abortion and wants to teach creation to our children. She was picked because of that, to get those votes, and touts her faith as a political qualification. So we can’t quite say who cares. But I understand the point – it would be nice if it was less of a issue in U.S. politics.
Govoner Palin is a pentecostal!!! It is a insult to any thinking person if she is elected. Please stop
these crazy people!!! who is the nezt prez ?
Benni Hahn or Earnest Angley!
If SOME religious groups believe in creationism, but not ALL of them, then teaching it in our public schools is favoring one religion over another. That violates separation of church and state. (If we are going to have one established religion, why not mine?)
Anyway, the same thing goes for gay marriage: if SOME religions don’t like it, but not ALL of them, then unfairly forbidding it is letting SOME religions be functionally superior to others, and violates separation of church and state. The state needs to not discriminate, the churches can choose to do or not do religious ceremonies according to their beliefs, just like they can teach creationism or not.

She is free to worship in what ever religion she chooses just as I am or if I prefer to not worship at all. If she has been given the gift of tongues that’s fantastic. I think its a little nutty but that is my belief and I am entitled to have it. It becomes a problem when either she tries to force her beliefs on me or I try to force my beliefs on her.
I would suggest that the altered state of consciousness that is taught and peddled by the AOG is a very important issue. The experience has a deep and profound affect on those who undergo this form of brainwashing. The experience provides the means of “hearing God’s voice” and a disconnect from reality. I really cannot imagine someone in or near the Oval Office who regularly, as a part of their spirituality, disconnects from reality and hears voices that tell her the war in Iraq is God’s task.
Think about the possible ramifications on a host of very important issues let alone that we could be involved in all kinds of “holy wars…”
“gooothy rohoolah shambolla geeloo shodergatralla shistomanno pallafeelaqou yaquai dothumba rumba blort”-Sarah Palin
On a more serious note:
Remember, the faith of George W. Bush shaped his foreign and domestic policy. “I believe God wanted me to be president.” “God told me to strike Sadaam.”- G.W.B.
Whether or not he really believes this or is just using Christianity to gain Christian voters, one thing we can be sure of: this joining of church and state has had disastrous consequences.
The Assembly of God believes in speaking in tongues but not an altered state of consciousness. Believing in creationism, or that God speaks to people or even speaking in tongues are beliefs that are common with millions of Christians in many churches including many Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, etc…
Personally, I would much rather have leaders that pray and ask God to intervene in “political affairs.” Many U.S. Presidents prayed and asked God for wisdom in their decisions. This country is only 7% athiests. The rest of us believe in God and seek Him in many different ways.
Mike, you may not be understanding the issue of separation of church and state. Of course most Presidents have had a religion, and many of them prayed. However, our laws in this country must not favor the beliefs of one church’s beliefs over another’s. As long as the churches disagree, using a belief that belongs to one and not others is favoring that one. Even if half of the churches believe one way and half the other, favoring one over the other is making religious laws. Our government is made up of only secular laws IN ORDER TO HAVE FREEDOM OF RELIGION!!! If the government favors some religions over others, that is a very slippery slope toward doing away with your personal religious freedom!
Besides that, making religious opinions into laws is an admission that the churches who believe that opinion have failed. If the churches were succeeding, they wouldn’t need the secular government to enforce their morals. They could do it themselves.
Sarah Palin: “Comeandtiemybowtie!”
For those of you who would rather have a catholic in office you may want to look at what they believe. Also, to mock the things of the spirit of God, like speaking in tongues, shows me how spiritual you all are. It does not shock me though, for God’s Word says “the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him..”. I love the fact that someone could be in office who prays with the spirit of God.
I am very glad to see Sarah Palin as the VP pick. I noticed a lot of people saying that she denies her Pentecostal faith by claiming to be a Christian ????
Pentecostals are Christians…they just believe the whole gospel originally given to the church by the Apostles. As far as speaking in tongues…in the bible it was an outward showing of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, when a believer is “sealed to his inheritance(eternal life)by God…not a man. And it isn’t garbleteegook either. It’s something even the Christian doesnt understand…the bible says that speaking in tongues edifies the beleiver,or builds them up,encourages them toward God.. once at church, at the beginning of service, i was feeling heavy, but as the sevice opened and the congregation began to praise God,I started to speak in tongues at my pew and I felt that heaviness lift…Look in the book of Acts chapter 2:1-4…it happened to me…roaring wind and all..at home by myself…no noe teaching me a tongue-twister.
I really cannot imagine someone in or near the Oval Office who regularly, as a part of their spirituality, disconnects from reality and hears voices that tell her the war in Iraq is God’s task.
so, she belongs to a religion that thinks God lies? I am referring, of course, to Him saying, on the one hand, “Thou shalt not kill!” and on the other hand recommending wars.
Perhaps they have, to paraphrase the song, followed the wrong God home?
Actually Kim,whats going on in Iraq is just unfolding prophecy concerning the last days. One of the biggest fulfilled prophecies was Israel becoming a nation again in 1948 after being scattered in 70ad…that was foretold in Ezekiel about 2500 years ago..and the odds of a small country like that resurrecting after that long are astronomical without God’s hand in it
If she never spoke in tongues before,I’m sure she is now after losing the election. %$@#&! #*$%^%-Sarah Palin
Wayne — those were two different Gods.
I think the God who forbade killing was the real God, and the one who recommends unjust wars is his old Enemy.
And, if you think the odds of the Jews resurrecting their nation after all those years was unlikely, then you don’t know the Jews. Why do you think that Yahweh selected them as The Chosen People in the first place? Because He knew they would prevail.
i go to an ag church, and i don’t speak in tongues. just sayin’. but i know some people who do..
