Dead evangelical leader #1: Jerry Falwell. Dead evangelical leader #2: D. James Kennedy. Who will be next?
The easy money is on Pat Robertson. I’m gonna go out on a limb here though and say Paul and Jan Crouch in a plane crash. You could even call it an “evangelism explosion.”
Thank you. I’ll be here all week.
(Three of you, tops, will get the connection of that to Kennedy. Or should I say, “If you died tonight, do you know if you’d go to heaven or hell?” Only fifty-eight flashcards to go!)
First one to get it.
Funny — this came up today in conversation. I would have thought the easy money was on Billy Graham, but I have a great big soft spot (perhaps misplaced) for him so that’s probably not even a nice suggestion.
I, too, went out on a limb and thought Mark Driscoll, from burnout. Heck: he has a “death by ministry” thread on his blog.
Doesn’t Tammy Faye count?
Forgot about Tammy. But, no, Tammy hadn’t been a leader in the evangelical movement for twenty years. Felt like she was an evangelical orphan. A leader in her own way, but not a leader of the movement.
If you’re counting icons, though, then Kennedy makes three.
Don’t mess with Tammy Fae unless you want the gays on your case.
*groans* I am sad to say that I get it too. Yes, Graham is probably next, but he’s maintained a sense of decorum so I wouldn’t even want to put him in the same category as these guys.
Not an evangelical, but what about the Crystal Cathedral dude? Schuller, isn’t it? He’s gotta be pushing 70 or 80 by now.
I call Charles Stanley based purely on his age. Of course, I’ve seen several sub-pastors come to his church thinking the same thing, only to leave for greener pastures after they realize he’s NEVER going home.
Shame about Dr. Kennedy, though. I don’t like EE, but I didn’t find him anywhere near as obnoxious as Robertson or Falwell.
ba dum bum. but if robertson goes next where will i get my monthly crazy fix? with tammy faye gone, the world needs jan as well.
for the next fundie to croak or for me to maintain my entertainment level when PR kicks the bucket?
Ouch, David. Way to turn the tables on the question.
