Contrary to Evil Chutney’s ramblings, my next “recovering seminarian” career move will be cocktailianism, mixology, and bartending. The plan is to work for an old work buddy at his new digs, the Graveyard Tavern, which opens appropriately enough on Halloween. (My evangelical mother will just love the sound of that.)
Aside from spending too much time at the pub, the closest I come to bartending experience is church work. I suspect the main difference between the two will be that at the bar you can kick people the hell out when they act like asshats. As opposed to church, where you put them in charge of a damn committee and tell them they’re special.
Between now and then I’ve got to learn how to, um, tend bar. My new boss hasn’t tended bar himself for a few years, so he can’t tell me what the most important drinks are to learn by my heart of hearts. So tell me, gentle reader, what drink do you want me to learn to make for you? If you can make it in sometime, your new favorite bartender just might mix it up for you for free.
Looks like it’s going to be a cool spot. And it’s always good to know the bartender ;)
Well, before diabetes II–Brandy Alexander; Pink Lady; grasshopper; manhatten; gin tonic; and some of the drinks named after candy bars like Almond Joy, etc.
Cheerfully, Roger Kuhrt
Long Island Iced Tea, Strawberry Daquiri. Also, I think Appletinis are quite en vogue right now.
Here’s someone’s Top 100 list of most popular drinks: http://www.webtender.com/statistics/all-time-top.html
I’m pretty fond of Southern Comfort Manhattens. Prety straight forward. But takes a good touch to get it right.
I like a really smooth bottle of bourbon, Woodford Reserve, just poured over a small glass of ice. Can you handle that one for me? I’m a simple fat man, that likes simple fat man drinks.
Too bad you weren’t mixing drinks YEARS ago. Would have made all those family gatherings much more tolerable.
Hey, grandma did what she could (when no one was looking). I always wondered why she wouldn’t let would let me drink from one punch bowl but not another (at your wedding, no less). ;)
Ah! I do like the Ricard Pastis and water. Especially since it’s only as of lat that I can remember the name “Ricard Pastis.” Sorry I missed this post the first time around; but really: it’s nice to discuss the comforting comfort of liquor in the cold gray wintertime, eh?
