I’ve been convinced for a while now that no further good can come of public discussion and what not of the whole abortion issue. It’s just been played out. But tonight I realized I was wrong.
I have a new tactic. But before I spoil the fun, here’s the background. As you know, anti-abortionators (or whatever the hell the PC term for them is these days) assert that fetuses (fetii?) are people too. So are my cats, I might add, but that doesn’t give them legal rights.
But that’s a tangent. As persons, they reason, fetii are entitled to certain rights, among them the right not to be aborted, or as they would put it, killed. Some have even gone so far as to call them fetal-Americans. I’ve never been to Fetusia, but I hear it’s a beatiful country. Lovely fjords.
So here’s the tactic. Odds are that in your state, there’s a Department of Social Workers in Favor of Feeling Superior to Shitty Poor People or some such. Odds are they take children away from these abusive parents so that they will be abused no longer.
And there’s the rub. Let’s put fetal-American rights to the test, by gum. Remember when folks would try to convict someone of two murders for killing one pregnant woman? They were trying to put one in under the radar.
Let’s do the same. Locate the pregnant anti-abortionbot nearest you. Extra points if she’s obnoxious or related to Randall Terry. Call your local state agency and report her for emotional/ideological/spiritual abuse of one fetal-American that she so cruelly keeps locked up in her womb. Demand that the fetal-American in question be immediately taken into state custody for its emotional/ideological/spirituality safety. Double points if you start the whole conversation off by telling them you’ve been torn over what to do but that it became very clear after you prayed about it.
You have to get a license to drive, but any bitch can carry around a fetal-American. Think of the children. It’s high time the epidemic of fetal abuse be stopped, and that right soon.
I respect your right to your pro-choice opinion, and also your disdain for self-righteousness, however, as a believer in fetal-rights, I have to take issue with your implied stance that the idea that fetuses are people too is silly (“so are my cats”). I think it is a shame problem when liberals treat this issue in a comical way, or imply that only right-wing religious hicks are pro-life. Just because some pro-life people are sometimes closed-minded doesn’t mean you should disrespect the movement. Anything valuing life deserves respect, even if you disagree.
First, a disclaimer: The owners of this site take no responsibility for the actions of Evil Chutney, who hacks into this site and whose posts we are powerless to edit or delete. That said, Evil Chutney sometimes speaks wisdom amidst his rantings, and I’m not sure we’d delete his comments if we could.
Since I’m not the author of the post, I can only speculate, but I think the post was directed to just those self-righteous leaders of the movement, not the movement as a whole. In the same vein as those self-righteous leaders actively harassing abortion providers and their families. Along the lines of “turnabout is fair play.”
I also don’t think Evil Chutney was implying anything about pro-lifers being hicks. Although I imagine that if he thought he’d get a rise out of anyone for doing so, he would have said so explicitly. (He’s a bit of an ass that way.)
I’d agree, vaguely and in principle, that “anything valuing life deserves respect.” The crucial question for me is do different forms and stages of life deserve different forms and stages of respect. For me, the value of life is not absolute or uniform, except in some vague, abstract sort of way.
Of course the first comment you would get would be from a pro-lifer. No doubt refreshing their internet browser every 5 minutes waiting to go on attack to support the rights of the unborn. I bet they also have one of those clever “vote the bible” bumber stickers. I would write up some crafty comment pretending to come from the perspective of an abused fetal american, but hey – I’m tired and just not that creative. Sorry. Maybe next time.
Hi Robyn. I am a pro-life, though I really hate the word “pro-lifer” because it sounds like “bible-thumper” or something. I am not a Christian or a Republican. So yea, I don’t have a sticker.
I don’t really understand why it is so hard for people to wrap their head around the idea that someone can have an opinion that is traditionally conservative without it being based in Christian doctrine. Not talking to you, chutney. I know you’re more than capable. Now, evil chutney … he seems to be a bit of a polarist (I think I just made that word up. It means a person who like to polarize issues).
Instead of trying to write a “crafty comment pretending to come from the perspective of an abused fetal american,” you might just read some testimonies of people (former fetuses) who survived their mother’s abortion attempt. Here are some: http://members.tripod.com/~joseromia/survivors.html
